Albums I Can Listen To All The Way Through

Flower Boy

Tyler, The Creator: July 21, 2017

Can listen to this album cover to cover. My personal favorite Tyler The Creator album. This is one of my comfort albums, it reminds me of Highschool when I was still trying to figure out who I was and what my music taste was. When I was embarrassed to say what was in my headphones even though I wore headphones all day everyday no matter the period because I was bored. When I was not considered attractive. This album connected with me.

Dirty Computer

Janelle Monae:April 27, 2018

Personally I feel like this album taught me about the world. This album came out during the midst of Covid. I had this album on repeat like it was law.I was becoming who I am now, listening to this album explain to me that everything was sex, which was an analogy of the power dynamics in the world. So I had to ask myself who’s screwing me. People didn’t take this album as seriously as they should’ve. But I did. It was so undertones, but you could hear the political undertones. Marvelously done.

MAX:March 26, 2021

Every single song on this album is a bop. I love this album with all my heart foreal. Imagine going from having a fire Nickelodeon movie, Rags. To having a fire album. I used to have such a crush on him too. I always have good taste in men, because they end up being great. I would like to say I had a rational reaction when I first heard this album, but no. It literally lit my brain up like a Christmas tree. It was in my heart and on my mind all the time. Honestly, I’m about to listen to it again now.

I Was Mature For My Age, But I Was Still A Child

GroupTherapy.:June 27, 2023

Speaks to my soul. I feel like these are the black kids that would be bullied in a majority black school because they act differently. I feel like it’s a nice mix of punk rock, r&b, rap, and emotional moments. Still Alive with that voicemail at the end was chef's kiss. I love these quirky black people who used to be child stars until they aged out of their diversity appeal. I mean Lab Rats and Bella and the Bulldogs. I loved both of those for these guys and they went on to greatness. Now I need to too.

Save Rock and Roll

Fall Out Boy: April 12, 2013

This album was my childhood. My mom played this album all my life. Since it came out this album has impacted my brain, my love for rock and roll. I was a kid in a carseat singing about how I was a troubled soul. When I was a kid, what did I know about being a troubled soul? I’ve loved Fall Out Boy ever since. I don’t care about the naysayers who say they’ve changed, or fallen off, or they’ve become too mainstream. I mean look at this freaking album cover, it’s fire. This image is tattooed across my freaking heart man.

Native

One Republic:March 22, 2013

Didn’t even realize this album came out the year of Save Rock and Roll. I’ve probably listened to this album less, but this is a straight play through album. The song counting stars was everywhere. I lived was everywhere. But if anyone ever took the time to actually listen to this album they would’ve been pleasantly surprised. I mean have a hard time remembering to listen to entire albums. Usually I keep liking songs off the same album individually until I finally think to go check it out. By then I’ve usually missed the concert.

Cry Baby

Melanie Martinez: August 14, 2015

Found this when I got into my Youtube content days. Unlike other kids who actually used Youtube to watch videos, I only used it for music. I used it to watch music videos too. I feel like every young girl deserves to have a Melanie Martinez phase. Every girl deserves to feel how I fell in 2017 when I discovered her and saw the Mrs. Potato Head video and watched the effects of plastic surgery. She was making wonderful music with a good message for a specific crowd. Us world hating tweens and I dug it.

Badlands

Halsey: August 28, 2015

Beginning Halsey and Melanie Martinez filled my youtube page. I wasn’t watching content creators, I was listening to music. Youtube was my loyal companion until Spotify came into my life.I thought I was so different, like I was an alien, and I waswondering why no one felt as out of it about the world as I was. Then I found these songs, and also books. That’s when I felt something. I got obsessed about the worlds I could create by myself, I didn’t need people anymore or friends. I just needed my imagination and music.

1000 Forms of Fear

Sia:July 4, 2014

Sia’s voice made my little middle school self believe that there was some type of turmoil I was going through. Sia to me is what Lana Del Rey was to white women. I was listening to Sia tell me that big girls don’t cry when their in a toxic relationship. Singing about alcoholism, self harm. I think this whole album brought out some dark thoughts I was afraid to admit lived in my mind. Just like everyone else. This album made me think about death. It was such a dark album and her voice was so crunchy. It was my favorite.

In the Lonely Hour

Sam Smith: November 6, 2015

Why was I a middle aged white woman who found out her husband was cheating and lit his clothes on fire then drove around crying for hours. Only to let him return home and act like I didn’t know the cheating was going on when I listened to this album. This was on repeat when I listened to Sia, and these two toxic albums did not mix, but I drank it up anyway. I think that's why I took such a drastically dark switch in my personality. When I started hating anything and everyone. Including myself.

Death of A Bachelor

Panic! At the Disco:January 15, 2016

I remember when I first discovered Panic! At the disco. It was way after I got into My Chemical Romance which is weird. Usually it’s the other way around. Anyways. I was on the phone with Adaptor and I listened to the whole album on the TV. Then I listened to the album again and again and again. Then I went through their entire discography. This album really came at a turning point in my life and my musical awakening. I think being a weird black kid, Panic! At the Disco is a must.

J. Cole:December 9, 2014

I remember my parents listened to J. Cole so much during my childhood that I thought he was a super old rapper or something. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized he was about the same age as my parents. I didn’t get into J. Cole until middle school. When I really listened to him and connected with him. He basically formulated my entire preference when it comes to rap music. I prefer a lyricist who isn’t just making fun sounds. Who isn’t just fronting about being a gangster. I prefer Cole Word foreal.

Finding it Hard to Smile

lovelytheband:August 3, 2018

I will always remember listening to this album with my friend. He showed me one song, and I was obsessed with it. Then I went to look at the rest of the album and became obsessed with it too. This album was so me because this was a point in time where I was faking my smiles anymore. When I hit middle school I realized I didn’t need to please people anymore. That’s when I slowly became the me that you currently see. Some people say that I am confident. I say that I am content with who I actually am.

Ungodly Hour

ChloexHalle:February 26, 2021

This album should’ve won a Grammy, it held me down through the pandemic. It held everyone down through the pandemic. Plus every performance they put on was spectacular. Love them seriously. Had me watching every interview they did, everything they did. I still do till this day. It was them, Max, and MGK holding me down during the pandemic with new music. If I remember correctly, this was my most played album on my spotify wrapped. I can’t wait for them to put out another album together. They do best together.

Tickets to My Downfall (Sold Out)

Machine Gun Kelly:September 29, 2020

I liked him as a rapper, he was obviously not my favorite rapper. But when he suddenly came out with a pop punk album, he moved positions in my brain. He is literally a male version of PINK. I loved this album, I know my parents were tired of it. I remember the day it came out, I listened to the entire thing on the TV all the way through before I started listening to it everywhere. I love when rappers switch up and try new things. I hate when people act like changing genres is so bad.

Unorthodox Jukebox

Bruno Mars:December 7, 2012

Bruno Mars is an amazing artist. I don’t care what anyone says about it. In the 2010’s that man was everywhere. He was very present in the time of collabs and a singer being on a rapping album with happy rappers. He evolved with the times, it was so wonderful. He made a wonderful album. Now he sings sexy music, back then he sang young love music. Always though, he makes bangers. If he is singing about a woman, or whatever. He could sing a grocery list and make it sound good.

Dope: Music From the Major Motion Picture

Various Artist:June 15, 2015

I know what you’re thinking, this is a movie. But in the movie they had a band, and the songs they played were legit. I loved this movie with all my heart. I love weird black kids who don’t fit in. I also love Lakeith Standfield and he was in this movie. Awreeoh is the band they were in and they only did a few songs, but they were fire. I resonated with them. Lemonade Mouth(Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Various Artist:April 12, 2011

This was one of Disney’s best movies. I was obsessed with the drummer, I thought he was so cute when I was a kid. If Disney would’ve turned them into a real life band, they would’ve had a hit sensation. Everything Bridgit Mendler touched turned to gold, and when they didn’t use her right she vanished. As she should queen. I was rooting for her and Adam Hicks to be together in this movie. They seemed like such a cute couple. But I wanted the long haired guy for me.

Ambition

Wale: November 1, 2011

Ambition was another one of those rap albums my parents wore the breaks off of. I didn’t even know he was a young rapper, they played him so much. This is my one and only play straight through album for him. This album raised him to fame fame I feel. Then that’s when he kind of started to change. I don’t think he ever hit J. Cole level status for me, even though back then they were neck and neck. It was his, Cole, and Kendrick fighting for the crown and in the end he kind of bowed out of it.

Pop Psychology

Neon Trees:April 22, 2014

This was one of my favorite albums in middle school. Even though I didn’t understand the messages and how accurate they were until much later. Back then I just though the album was a bop because of the fast paced songs and positive vibes man. Me and my mom were hooked on this album for a while, and I can still put it on in the car and get her to sing it with me bar for bar.
